Becoming a Praise Junkie

There are at least two safe addictions in this world:
Addiction to vegetables, and
Addiction to praising God.
Enough said about vegetables. Get addicted. Stay addicted.

But praise is more of a mystery:
Praise lights and lightens the soul.
Our poor, tired souls are weighed down with anger, overcome with grief, seething with envy, any of which leave our hearts careening toward a crash.

If we imagine praising God is one tentative step in a right direction, we offer up, "I praise you, God, for your creation." When we are praising God, nothing else can lick at our wounded souls. We are, for a brief moment, immune to the enemy's pounding.

It is hard to become addicted to praising God. It takes energy and intention. We have to leave our sewers of living as victims or martyrs. Praising God lifts us up out of our muddy places of habit.

I can't explain praise. The author of Psalm 119 says it best:
Seven times each day I stop and shout praises for the way you keep everything running right. For those who love what you reveal, everything fits...
We praise, God reveals, everything fits. That is an addiction worth pursuing.

Become a praise junkie.
