Answer Your Wiring

My most beloved UNC college professor, Dr. James Cunningham, had the most entertaining way of teaching us how to teach reading to young children.

Though I forget the context on this particular day, I can still see him saying,
If your phone is ringing, answer it.
I laughed out loud...literally.

Everyone has heard, if the shoe fits, wear it, but the phone idea was new to me.

Except, is that idea new at all?

In the parts of the world where electricity is a given, a house is built and wired for light. Though the people inside are the true warmth, our mind's eye sees the house come to life when the wiring is complete and the lights burn brightly within.

The wiring creates the "shine" of the house.

Our wiring--what we are created to do--is the "shine" of our personality, our gifts, our time and place in history. When we answer our wiring--that is, persevere to do what we are created to do--our shine and our warmth spread light to others. Life seems to match our energy and our passion, and it is a joy to do our work.

So Dr. Cunningham, may I amend your saying just a bit?
If your wiring is ringing, answer it.
The world needs your shine.
