Speaker 2: I just need a day to myself. I have gone to work every day this week, coached my son's ball team, mowed the yard, made house repairs. I have made sure the cars are running and helped my wife as much as possible around the house. When do I get my time?
*************
Speaker 1: I know how you feel. I have kept the earth on its axis and the sea in its boundaries and the oxygen where you can retrieve it. I have fielded complaints and accusations and watched people check the stars for their future. I have seen people feel unloved while saying no to what I offer. These are people I made. I get needing time to one's self, to walk away from responsibility. Maybe I, too, need a day to myself.
Speaker 2: For heaven's sakes, you're God! What could you possibly need? You can get anything you want at the snap of your...finger...or whatever that would look like.
*************
Speaker 1: Really? Anything? Let's give that a try. What I want most is for you to want to contemplate me today, on your day off, when you could have time just to yourself. That's what I want most. But you know, if I snap my fingers and make you want it--which I could, of course--then that is what I want least. It would be like you forcing your wife to love you--which, of course, you can't--but how real would that be even if you could?
Speaker 2: Okay, okay. What's in it for me?
*************
Speaker 1 (patiently): The answers to the questions that lie deep within your wiring. You wonder why you're here and you how you got here. I know those answers. I created you to have the questions so I could love you with the answers, with an all-encompassing, all-surrounding love that doesn't exist anywhere else.
Speaker 2: I don't know if I want that love. Sounds too...weighty. Like an obligation, like something around my neck that I can't get away from.
*************
Speaker 1: That's because you see my love as yet another responsibility, like the love you have for your family that comes through as you care and provide for them. Remember I am the provider wanting to love and care for you. That might be a little more palatable, a little more worth the contemplation.
Speaker 2: (Pause) Okay, I'll think about it.
*************
Speaker 1: That touches my heart. Thank you.
Speaker 2: (To himself) I touched the heart...of God?
